Increase your impact immediately by tapping into right brain bold thought.

Most people have been taught at a very early age conservative, limiting mindsets like there is only one right answer, be polite, do as you’re told, be sensible, stick to what works. Cautious, prudent, conservative thought patterns that pounce on innovative creative ideas. This is a limiting mindset and it decreases innovation, productivity and morale. I will prove to you how pervasive a limiting mindset is….

The Limiting Mindset
Try this Group Exercise- ask people to notice everything BLUE in the room. Give them two minutes to do this.
Next, have everyone shut their eyes and instruct them to randomly shout out anything GREEN in the room.

Only a couple answers will come forward because as you asked people to focus on the blue, they likely disqualified any other color. This is a limiting mindset. It only looks for data that falls within these limits. Consider how many times you logically analyze what you know at the expense of other creative possibilities that you disqualify along the way. Wouldn’t your workplace be completely different if you recognized this? Everyday you could be brewing with new ideas and creative energy if you stopped limiting mindsets from festering.

How many times have your heard limiting mindsets like this before?
That will never work
That idea is stupid
Be sensible
He will never approve… (And on and on- you get the point)

This is why kings used a court jester. The role these people played was to adopt contrary or silly ideas to prevent the king from getting into a fixed or limiting mindset. It looks like our current financial crisis could use a court jester because traditional solutions haven’t been working.

Scientists suggest we use a very small part of the brain because we spend most of our time focused on left brain, analysis and could tap more of our brains power if we consciously stimulated the right brain. The majority of people are logical and we live in the left brain.

Listening for Logic
All the information in the world won’t give you new ideas. Analyzing information leaves out all possibilities for new ideas and direction. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.

New ideas add energy and enthusiasm to a project, team and your work overall.

Are you in your Right Brain?

Nobel Prize winner, psycho biologist Roger Sperry discovered the concept of left and right brain thinking. Each hemisphere of the brain processes different information. The Left brain is the objective, analytical logical half of the brain. The right brain is subjective, playful, creative and intuitive.
The left brain looks at things in a sequential way. The right brain looks at things in a more random way and sees the whole rather than the parts. Right brain thinking involves creating combinations that weren’t there before, suddenly seeing how things connect and relate (just like the punch line of a good joke it is the coming together of two illogical yet related ideas)

The right brain thinker will come up with new perspectives on a problem and the left brain thinker will analyze whether it will work.

Enemies of Ideas

Children are so much more creative and jump on new ideas so quickly likely because they have less to unlearn. As adults any new idea comes across resistance because we are accustomed to “figuring things out” based on what we already know. Creative thinking involves playing with what we don’t know. The unknown almost always brings resistance.

Change common limiting mindsets into powerful ones…

Activities:
Imagine you are hired to redesign a work process in your job right now and you have freedom to do whatever you want, what would you change?

Rename things in your office to create a more powerful mindset. For example a meeting could be called a think tank, Or a budget could be called a forecast for sustained impact ( ok I like it).

Socrates- The power of questions

Socrates was famous for asking questions. Questions establish a climate of learning, possibility, curiosity and engagement. Ask questions about:
Why are people here? (Not just to get a paycheck)
What do they think about a solution or problem?
What are there needs?
What are possible problems with a solution?

Speak Don’t Write

Most business writing or memo taking uses the left brain, if you were to communicate the same message verbally you would be activating your left and right brain. Your communication and solutions would improve.

Laugh at the Future
Tragedy? You will look back and laugh at this. Do it now.

Smile More
It stimulates the right brain

Random Thinking
To move away from routine linear thought, open up your thought patterns and encourage random nonlinear thinking.

Random thought exercise… go around the room and each person says a group of words that they randomly come up with. The only rule is the words must be completely unrelated. For example the words, house, cat and money are related because a cat and money are usually inside a house whereas the words house, church and candy have no relation to each other.
Most people can only come up with a few words that are completely unrelated.

Mind Map
With a group, Choose a challenge and brainstorm random solutions. Encourage ridiculous and silly ideas and map them in a mind map fashion

Oh Lighten Up! Your quick, easy lighten up Idea for the month
The value of our dollar keeps going down- I think we should just go back to trading chickens again
Ok that’s all I’ve got this month, my weakening stock portfolio is affecting my brain, I will laugh at it soon
